Save the Humanities

This was mostly filmed on a Panasonic AG-UX90 camera with a few clips from people’s iPhones. To light the interviews we used a 3 point lighting set up and we also used lavalier microphones as well. We then edited the film on Premiere Pro. Our film won the “Equity and Justice” award at the Fall 2023 film screening festival the Media, Journalism, and Film department at Miami puts on.

My group was challenged with creating a film to put on for the film festival. We knew that we wanted to create a nonfiction film- it was just a matter of deciding on the subject. At Miami there were a lot of people discussing the fact that so many of the humanities majors were being taken away. We decided to make a film about it so that we could raise awareness and even provide solutions for the university.

We reached out to several interviewees and finally decided on two faculty members and two students. We had originally interviewed a third student, but unfortunately had to cut 2 interviews as their majors were not as relevant as we had thought that they were. We also ended up reshooting two of our interviewees that actually made it into the video because we wanted to get the lighting on them just right. To supplement the interviews, each of my group members also went around campus to gather b roll. At the end we edited our footage using Premiere Pro.

I was extremely proud of this film as I felt like it was one of the first times that I got to make a film that helped to make a difference and open up people’s eyes to different perspectives.

This was my final project for my intermediate video production class. I decided to interview my Dad so that he could talk about his work as an Operations Manager at Beckman Machine. I thought that this was an interesting film to make because there are not many people working in this industry anymore due to the increasing powers of technology. Many people do not know much about his job, so I was glad I was able to give him a place where he was able to speak on it.

I went with my Dad to Beckman Machine and I interviewed him about his job. He then showed me around his workplace so I could decide what I wanted to get b roll of. I had my Dad operate machines and even drive a forklift for the b roll. It was challenging to get this b roll because of the harsh lighting in the workshop.

I was really proud of the film because this was my first time making a solo film on a camera that was not an iPhone camera. I felt that the shots turned out really nicely and I love how his interview turned out.
